Nothing shown on wxs.us is our own data. Everything comes from the free, public sources below, and this project is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to any of them.

The Terms of Service ask you not to build anything on top of this service, and this page is why that is no loss: every source we use is open to everyone. If you want the data, get it directly from the providers below, fresher and with no middleman.

Forecasts, conditions, and alerts

• National Weather Service API. Forecasts, hourly forecasts, current observations, and active alerts, from api.weather.gov.
• National Digital Forecast Database. Gridded forecast elements from the NDFD XML service.
• NWS map services. Watch, warning, and advisory polygons, and severe weather outlook map layers.

Severe weather

• Storm Prediction Center. Severe weather outlooks for days 1 through 8, watches, and mesoscale discussions.
• Iowa Environmental Mesonet. The archive of past SPC outlooks behind the Extreme outlooks maps, and the national radar mosaic tiles.

Radar

• NEXRAD on AWS Open Data. Level II volume data and Level III products from every US radar site, published by NOAA and Unidata. The radar viewers on the website, the Android app, and the desktop apps read these public buckets directly.

Forecast radar

• High-Resolution Rapid Refresh (HRRR) and NAM 3 km model output on AWS Open Data. The forecast radar frames are rendered from these models' simulated reflectivity.

Air quality

• EPA AirNow. Air quality index observations. The API is free with a sign-up.

Location lookup

• GeoNames. US zip code coordinates, licensed CC BY 4.0.

Base maps

• CARTO. The dark basemap tiles under the radar and outlook maps.
• OpenStreetMap contributors. The map data those tiles are drawn from.
